Tips for Children and Parents

Encourage the use of a small notebook or scribbling pad for writing down all the assignments so that there is no disorder about when certain assignments must be turned in to the tutor.

Educate your child that studying is more than just doing homework. One of the most misunderstood aspects of homework is the difference between studying and doing homework assignments. Promote your kid to do things like:


1) Keep a note as he/she is reading a lesson

2) learn to scan material fully

3) train to study tables and charts

4) learn to recap what he/she has read in his/her own style

Noting points is an important skill and must be developed. Most of the kids don't know how to take notes in the classes. Some feel they have to note down each and every word the tutor says. Others have cleverly realized the value of summarized form of noting. Well prepared teachers/tutors present their classes in a format that provide itself to outline form of noting.

Home dictionary is must, but if it is kept on a rack to get dust, it won't be good. Keep it in an easily reached place and let your kid see you refer to it from time to time. If the family dictionary is kept in the living room and the child studies in his room, get him an economical dictionary for his limited use.

Better dictionary, Encyclopedia and managerial skills depend on the capability to alphabetize. See if your kids tutor practices alphabetizing in class.

Keep your kid feel confident for exams. Taking exams can be a painful experience for some kids. Explain to your child that starting reading night before a test is not useful. Better to have a good and tension free sleep. Kids also need reminding that while taking an exam; they should thoroughly read the directions before they start their exam. They must be advised to skip questions for which they don't know/remember the answers. They can always go back to those if there's time. Good advice for any kid before taking an exam: take a deep breath, settle down, and leap in. Always carry an extra pencil/pen just in case.

Parents help in doing homework? Sure-if it is clearly difficult to do so, such as spelling out difficult words or doing a math problem that won't prove. No-if it is something the child can easily handled by him/her and learns from the process.
Check math problems after your child has solved. Remember to make positive and encouraging comments - you don't want your child to relate homework with fights at home.

Handling the report cards? To avoid shocks and upsets by your children, tenderly discuss from time to time, such as "How did the math test go?" Need any assistance?" are questions that indicate interest. Contact the teacher of the school at least thrice a year, along with your kid, to learn what the progress may be. Be tuned with kids talks, these will be the child's way of indicating frustration in understanding content or lack of study time with the topic. Though, be careful in contacting teachers without your kid’s interest. It may disturb good belief between you and your kid.
